Friends Mugs!

Friends' Café mugs are available for sale at the cafe counter for $10. The mugs are not only a great way to keep your coffee hot, your purchase supports the Friends of the Health Sciences Library. All customers who use their own mug receive a discount on regular coffee.

How did the Friends' Café come about?

The renovated building was designed to facilitate the Health Sciences Library's leadership role in teaching and learning, research, and information access, and provide comfortable surroundings amidst all of the technology. The new Friends' Café was created with the intention of providing a comfortable space for collaboration amongst all health affairs students and faculty. Library users can get a cup of coffee and a bite to eat without leaving campus or the convenience of wireless Internet access.

The Report of the Chancellor's Task Force on Intellectual Climate (August 1997) clearly states as a barrier to intellectual life: "too few lounges, cafes, and comfortable eating places that can provide space for informal conversation," and recommends the creation of "new coffee lounges, small cafes and eating places around the campus. … The coffeehouses on Franklin Street cannot provide the same convenience and accessibility for students and faculty, who need a place to meet on campus." We hope that the Friends' Café will provide an environment conducive to learning and reflection, as well as a spot to relax and re-energize.
