Librarian, Health Sciences Library
School of Medicine Liaison

The Health Sciences Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks customer-focused and technically savvy applicants and nominees for a one-year fixed-term position of medical librarian for the School of Medicine. This position works with other librarians to meet the instructional and information needs of faculty, students, and staff.

Background

The Health Sciences Library is noted for innovative electronic digital libraries for health professionals and the general public, well-received online educational programs, and service-oriented staff (http://www.hsl.unc.edu/, http://www.nchealthinfo.org/, http://library.ncahec.net/). The library is the coordination site of the NC Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) statewide system of libraries for health professionals, the oldest in the country. The Health Sciences Library is the primary library for the UNC-CH Schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health, and the 720-bed UNC Hospitals. HSL employs 65 FTE staff and has an annual budget of $8 million. The library contains over 333,450 total volumes and receives over 4,000 serial titles. The library provides integrated library instruction and electronic reserves to support academic courses. Librarians offer a variety of additional services including customized literature searches and electronic applications development. A total renovation of the library building was completed in early 2005. The library is now fully wireless and equipped with public computer workstations, small group study rooms, meeting rooms, videoconference rooms; media design studios, teaching labs and a campus equipped computer lab.

Primary Responsibilities

The School of Medicine Librarian is the primary provider of library support for the School of Medicine, which includes both medical and allied health programs. In this role, the Librarian's duties include conducting needs assessments, working with faculty and staff to provide instruction, serving on appropriate committees, speaking at department and other group meetings, offering current awareness services, and meeting other documented needs of these clients. The Librarian is part of a team of librarians, support staff, and library clients working to achieve the library's mission to manage information and knowledge to advance health and health care. Work is performed in client settings and in the library.

Principal Activities

40% Work with the Assistant Department Head for User Services/Education Services Coordinator and other librarians to develop and deliver web-based and in-person educational sessions and information services to support on and off-campus instruction. Develop resource guides and instructional materials or other relevant tools for general or course specific purposes. Areas of expertise for this position are related to the School of Medicine and bibliographic formatting software.

35% Provide direct user services. Assist users to effectively select and use information tools in-person, electronically, or by other appropriate methods. Provide in-depth consultations by appointment.

15% Participate in department meetings and other library groups as assigned.

10% Engage in professional development and professional service activities.

Organizational Relationship

Position reports to the Assistant Department Head for User Services/Education Services Coordinator.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

Required
  • Minimum ALA-accredited MSIS, MLS or equivalent information science graduate degree at time of appointment. Comparable degree in information technology, public health, nursing, or other healthcare field will be considered.
  • Knowledge of/experience with Internet technologies
  • Demonstrated ability to excel both independently and in a collaborative working environment
  • Demonstrated ability to provide in-depth information service
  • Ability to multitask in a dynamic environment
  • Advanced level computer skills
  • Excellent time management and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills
  • Sound judgment, sensitivity, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with EndNote®, RefWorks®, and similar products
Preferred
  • Knowledge of/experience with health professions and in-depth understanding of their information needs
  • Proficiency searching the published and grey literature and an understanding of evidence based medicine
  • Experience evaluating and organizing information resources
  • Experience using portable technologies to deliver services at the point of need
  • Experience or education in evaluating programs or services
  • Experience teaching or public speaking

Salary and Benefits
