GRADUATE ASSISTANT IN BIOMEDICAL INFORMATICS

This Graduate Assistant position is based in the Health Sciences Library User Services Department and is jointly supported by the Health Sciences Library (HSL), SILS and the Carolina Center for Genome Science (CCGS). This position is also a member of the developing Biomedical Informatics Research Support and Training (BIRST) unit of the CCGS.

The Health Sciences Library serves faculty, students, and staff in schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Public Health; UNC Health Care system which includes a 680-bed teaching hospital; and North Carolina AHEC - the statewide program for health professional education. HSL employs 65 FTE staff and has an annual budget of $7 million. The library is nationally recognized for its leadership in outreach and education services. It provides a unique presentation of Internet-accessible electronic resources and services through the HSL web site (http://www.hsl.unc.edu).

I. Principal Responsibilities

After orientation and training:
  • Provide informatics support to the UNC Chapel Hill bioinformatics community, including the Carolina Center for Genome Science. Examples: resource identification, information seeking assistance, information systems design and development, user needs assessment
  • Assist in creating and updating both web and print user guides and documentation
  • Contribute to library projects as assigned. Examples: web-based database and user interface development, collaborative communication tool development, Display Wall and Access Grid end-user support

II. Desired Qualifications

  • Graduate student in information, library or computer science preferred
  • Experience or course work in one or more of these areas: reference; database design and development; library and information services; web editing, programming, and application development
  • Experience or course work in the biomedical or life sciences
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm and aptitude for acquiring new skills and working effectively with users
  • Demonstrated excellent time management, problem-solving, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Commitment to work for at least one year

III. Schedule

20 hours a week. Flexible schedule including some weekend, evening, and holiday hours. Position starts Fall 2008. Salary is $10,000 for academic year (fall & spring semesters) and includes health insurance.
