Mission Statement

The Health Sciences Library manages information and knowledge to advance health.

  • The library provides access to information and knowledge and educates users to manage information and knowledge
  • The library creates and maintains accurate, reliable, integrated information and knowledge systems.
  • The library participates actively in the development of information and knowledge management policies.
  • The library conducts and promotes research in information and library science.

The Health Sciences Library is the primary library for the UNC-Chapel Hill Schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Public Health and the University of North Carolina Hospitals,. It also serves the health information needs of the entire university. The library serves the state’s health professionals through the Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Library and Information Services Network.

The library is open to the public and users have free access to the open collections. The library collections contain over 290,000 volumes, including recent and historical materials, 4,000 current serial titles, and over 8,900 audiovisual and microcomputer software programs.
