An excellent way to enhance the Library's support for interdisciplinary programs on campus, including bioinformatics and genomics, is to include library materials and services in your grant proposals. This supplemental funding can be used to purchase books, journals, and databases in your area and/or to provide services such as dedicated searching, teaching, or online research and educational materials.

The regulations for funding from federal and private grant agencies differ. We are happy to work with you to put together an information-based component of your research proposal. Please contact us via our Ask a Librarian service if you would like more information.

Federal Grants

If you are writing a grant proposal to a federal agency like the NIH, you may include a request for service support from the Library. Services we have provided in the past include dedicated and mediated searching of literature databases such as MEDLINE and EMBASE, dedicated instruction to courses and/or research groups, and the development of online learning and research materials including tutorials and classroom exercises.

Private Grants

There are few restrictions on what you can include in a grant proposal to a private organization. Not only can you include library and information services (as with federal funding applications), but you can also request funding for materials such as books, journals, and databases. In the last years the Library has been able to supplement its collections in ethnic and women's health because of dedicated funding from researchers and clinicians in those areas.
