Endowments and Funds

You may specify on the Membership Gift Form if you wish to donate directly to one of the following funds or endowments.

Friends of The Health Sciences Library Annual Fund
This trust provides for needs and activities that best support the objectives of the Health Sciences Library. Funds may be used for acquisitions, new technologies, capital expenses, or to address shortfalls in years of decreased state funding.

New Century Library Endowment Fund
The New Century Library Endowment Fund, a $2.5 million collection endowment, was created to meet the widening gap between state funding and the escalating costs of supporting biomedical research in a top-ranked university. Though expendable funds are needed to meet current needs, an endowment is an investment in the Health Sciences Library as an essential partner to the success of all health related programs and activities supported by the University. Not only are journal costs rising, but with the increase in research and new research fields at the University, a strong endowment is more important than ever before.

William B. Blythe Memorial Fund for the History of the Health Sciences
The Health Sciences Library has embarked on a campaign to endow the Dr. William B. Blythe Memorial Fund to help support the history of the health sciences and establish a curatorship for the rare and historical books collection. This fund will enable the historical and rare books areas of the library to be properly equipped with climate controlled storage, casework for exhibits, and specialized equipment for a preservation lab. Dr. Blythe was passionate about medicine and its heritage and wanted to share his enthusiasm with his students and colleagues. This fund will help preserve the history of health care advances for decades to come.

Frank H. Netter, M.D. Endowment
This endowment was established by Francine Netter Carlson in honor of Frank H. Netter, M.D. to support library services enhancing access to medical knowledge.

B.R. Wilcox Rare Books Endowment
The purpose of this account is to purchase books and materials for the Health Sciences Library Rare Books Collection.

Samuel & Harriette Hitt Health Sciences Library Endowment
This undesignated endowment named in honor of former director of the library was developed to address current and future high-priority needs of the Health Sciences Library.

Acquisitions Fund
Gifts designated for the Acquistion Fund will be used to purchase materials for our collections.
Funds may be used for acquisitions, new technologies, capital expenses, or to address shortfalls in years of decreased state funding.

Gifts in Kind
The Health Sciences Library accepts donations of books, journals and other materials that fit into the scope of our collection and do not duplicate our holdings. We are particularly interested in books authored or edited by UNC Health Affairs faculty. We appreciate it when the author signs a gift book. The library is also interested in books that are in good to fine condition of historical importance or those that augment or fill gaps in the collection. We accept specific journal issues or volumes to complete library holdings and occasionally accept large sets of a journal title not in our collection. More details about our gifts-in-kind policies can be found on this page of frequently asked questions: (http://www.hsl.unc.edu/AboutLib/ collections/donating.cfm).

If you would like to discuss donating a gift in kind, please contact Resources Management Services, 962-0500 or giftsforhsl@unc.edu.
