ILLiad Frequently Asked Questions

What is Interlibrary and Document Delivery Services?

We help obtain materials for UNC Health Affairs Faculty, Staff and Students owned or not owned by any of the UNC-Chapel Hill Libraries. Materials necessary for research are made available through cooperative agreements with other libraries. The average cost of obtaining interlibrary loan materials is $27.00. The Health Sciences Library absorbs most of this expense.

What is ILLiad?

ILLiad is the electronic system you use to request an item through Interlibrary Loan. The name ILLiad can be thought of as an acronym for InterLibrary Loan internet accessible database.

Who may use these services?

UNC Health Affairs Faculty, Staff and Students.

If I am disabled, how do I request an article/book chapter or book?

For ADA information, visit our ADA Information for Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery page.

May non-affiliated borrowers use your services?

Non-affiliated borrowers may sign up to use our article retrieval services through Loansome Doc or order through Request a Copy.

What if I can't remember my ILLiad username/password?

Contact the ILL staff during normal business hours.

Does Interlibrary Loan cost anything?

Yes, it costs the HSL approximately $27.00 per item, but you will be invoiced $5.00 per filled request. Invoices are sent monthly. Rush requests will cost an additional $5.00.

If an article costs over $40.00, you may be asked to pay $20.00 to off-set the cost.

Pricing for ADA patrons.

What materials may not be requested?

Many libraries will not loan entire volumes of journals, fragile materials, DVDs, or high demand materials.

How long does it take?

Plan ahead when requesting materials. The time it takes for a borrowed item to arrive depends upon the difficulty of the request and the location of the lending library. It may take 2-3 weeks or longer, but typically, an interlibrary request takes about 10 working days. If the item is available through TRLN (NCSU, NCCU, or Duke) it may take 3-4 working days.

Where will I pick up my material?

All articles will be delivered electronically to your desktop. Books must be picked up at the Health Sciences Library User Services Desk.

How do I get my articles when they arrive?

  1. Logon to ILLiad
  2. From the main menu, click the "Electronically Received Articles" link under the View Requests options.
  3. A list will be displayed containing all of the items that you have waiting to be viewed or downloaded.

How will I be notified when my materials arrive?

We will notify you by email when your items arrive.

Someone has a book checked out or it's missing from the library's collection. Will Interlibrary Loan order it for me? Will I be charged?

You will not be charged, if the item has been checked out in the library's catalog, declared lost or missing, or at the bindery. We will order the item from another library.

Can I request an article that has been torn out, or if the journal containing the article is at the Bindery?

In both cases we will order a request for the article and not charge you.

How long can I keep books I borrow through Interlibrary Loan?

The length on an item's loan period is determined by the lending library.

May I renew a book borrowed on interlibrary loan?

Not all lending institutions will renew materials. Renewal requests must be made a least 4 days before the due date and can be made only once. All books are subject to recall. If this should happen, you will be notified either by email or telephone. You will be charged $2.00 a day for books returned late. Late return of material jeopardizes the ability for us to borrow from other libraries.

How do I get foreign language material that is located in the Health Sciences Library Storage Facility?

If you haven't done so, register with the ILLiad system at http://www.hsl.unc.edu/illiad/logon.html. Once you have registered, login to the ILLiad system and request the article or volume there. There is no charge for materials from storage.
