GIFTS HONOR
TRANSLATOR OF HIROSHIMA DIARY

The Nathan A. Womack Surgical Society donated $1000 to the Health Sciences Library in honor of the late Dr. Warner Lee Wells, Jr. One of the original faculty members in the UNC Department of Surgery in 1952, Wells became a close friend of Japanese physician, Michihiko Hachiya who wrote his memoir, Hiroshima Diary: the journal of a Japanese physician, August 6-September 30, 1945. Hachiya's observations became available to English-language readers through the translating and editing work by Wells in 1955.

Dr. Robert Mendes, treasurer of the Womack Society, presented the check to the library. Dr. George Sheldon, Professor in the UNC Department of Surgery, donated a book from Dr. Wells' library to HSL. Pictured here viewing the yearbook of the Hiroshima Medical University are Dr. Robert Mendes; Carol G. Jenkins, HSL Director; Diane McKenzie, HSL History Librarian; and Dr. George Sheldon.
