HSL Unveils Strategic Plan

Health Sciences Library Strategic Plan
Download our Strategic Plan

At HSL, we aim to play a vital role in connecting people everywhere with knowledge to improve health. To ensure we are innovative and effective in this multi-faceted role we've developed a Strategic Plan.

Our Plan is a road map that charts new ways to connect you to information you need, when you need it. This might be at your desktop, laptop, or cell. It may be in the Library building, at the bus stop on Franklin Street, in a clinic in Africa, or in the comfort of your living room. We know your needs are changing, and we are changing with you!

Realizing that you have a stake in our shared future, we invite you to visit our Strategic Planning page to take a look at our plan.

Health Observances/NC Health Info

For information about these health concerns as well as local health care services, programs, and providers to help manage them, see NC Health Info Go Local at: http://nchealthinfo.org

Making Health Information Accessible to North Carolina's Military Families

NC Health Info, the most comprehensive online resource for trustworthy health information for North Carolinians, is partnering with local organizations to ensure North Carolina's military families have online access to quality health information. The Military Health section of NC Health Info is sponsored by the Citizen-Soldier Support Program whose mission is to build bridges between local community resources and military families.

Through this partnership with the Citizen-Soldier Support Program, Christie Silbajoris, NC Health Info Director, and Beth Ellington, NC Health Info Project Manager, recently completed usability testing of the Military Health section of the site in an ongoing effort to ensure that the information is relevant and easy to find for military families. Soldiers and military family members of the US Army Reserve 805th MP Company in Garner, NC participated and received $50.00 gift cards. Findings from the usability testing will inform improvements to the site which currently includes information on deployment concerns, PTSD, TBI, depression, the military health care system, and a special section concerning military children.

NC Health Info is also a partner of the Governor's Focus on Returning Veterans and their Families, a group charged with promoting best practices in the service of veterans and their families.

NC Health Info is based at the UNC Health Sciences Library. Made possible by funding from the State Library of North Carolina, the site includes information from over 6,000 Web sites selected and maintained by librarians from over a dozen academic and public libraries throughout North Carolina.

HSL Student Employee Wins MLK, Jr. Scholarship

Health Sciences Library Strategic Plan

The HSL wishes to extend congratulations to one of our own-- Jasmin Jones. Jasmin is a student employee at the Library and was awarded the 27th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship on January 21, 2009.

The MLK, Jr. Scholarships are open to all juniors at UNC-CH. The awards are given annually to students who, as judged by the MLK , Jr. Scholarship Committee, best exemplify Dr. King's commitment to our society. Jasmin has been active and committed to strengthening diversity in her community, particularly here at Carolina, and has served on HSL's diversity committee, a group that coordinates programming for Library staff and users related to diveristy issues.

Jasmin was awarded this scholarship at an event that headlined renowned poet and author, Maya Angelou, who, before making her remarks, happened to discuss the importance of libraries! We feel pretty lucky to have Jasmin as a part of our team, and to have Maya Angelou as an advocate for libraries!
