HSL Receives Grant Funding for Digital Projects

The UNC Health Sciences Library was recently awarded $34,850 for the first year of a three-year NC ECHO digitization grant project funded by the State Library of North Carolina through the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA). Building on a pilot project that resulted in the digitization of historical North Carolina journals in public health, dentistry, and eugenics, the proposed North Carolina History of Health Digital Library will contain over 800 volumes (approx. 350,000 pages) of core journals in medicine, public health, dentistry, pharmacy, and nursing from 1849 to 1977.

These materials document the development of North Carolina's health care and the health professions making them a significant part of the state's cultural heritage and history. Daniel Smith, Special Collections Librarian, is the project manager, and will coordinate each phase of the grant.

HSL's NC Health Info was also awarded grant funds in the amount of $54,057 for its consumer health portal. These funds will help HSL continue to maintain the most trustworthy, reliable source of consumer health information for North Carolinians. NC Health Info Project Manager Beth Ellington will coordinate the consumer health portal project.

Journal Cancellation Feedback Deadline is July 15

HSL is embarking on a comprehensive review of our journal subscriptions to achieve required cost savings for the next fiscal year. Our foremost goal is to make necessary cuts while having the least impact on our users. To provide your feedback on the cancellation candidates, visit our web page and enter your comments by July 15, 2009. Thanks in advance for your assistance in this process!

UNC Medical Student Wins Bean Student Research Award

For the third time in four years, a UNC medical student has won the William B. Bean Student Research Award from the American Osler Society. This year Chris Dibble, currently a third-year MD/PhD student, took the honors for his proposal entitled "Osler and Trudeau: The North American Campaign Against Tuberculosis." Chris last year also won the inaugural McLendon-Thomas Award in the History of Medicine sponsored by the Bullitt History of Medicine Club for earlier research on Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau [1848-1915], and presented his essay at a Bullitt Club lecture in November 2008.

Previous winners of the Bean Award are James Fraser in 2008 and Lee Hampton in 2006. James’ project title was "Molding an Independent Specialty: Plastic Surgery in Postwar America, 1919-1941" and Lee’s was "Albert Sabin and the Western Hemisphere Polio Eradication Campaign." Both students gave earlier versions of their research at Bullitt Club lectures. For further information, please see the Carolina Curator blog

Bullitt Club Lectures Now on iTunes

New and Updated Specialized Health Resources

HSL maintains specialized health resources to help you find collected resources online. Check out the following new or updated subject pages:

All Titles in JAMA Archives and Backfile Collection Now Available

All titles in the JAMA & Archives Journals Backfiles collection are now uploaded and available. The backfiles include every issue of JAMA & Archives Journals published from 1883 to 1997. This unusually rich digital archive features landmark articles that played a pivotal role in shaping the last century of medical research, clinical practice, and public health. When HSL originally purchased this content in December 2008, not all the backfiles had been uploaded, however, all titles are now live.

Library Resources for Bioterrorism and Disaster Month

July is Bioterrorism and Disaster Education Month. Libraries are important partners in planning for and handling disasters. We can help in emergency and disaster situations by

  • providing focused health information, including literature, data and responder tools
  • educating and training for preparedness and response
  • offering library space as a crisis and communications center
  • helping in recovery efforts, including expertise on filling out FEMA forms
  • gathering information and research
