Evaluate Online Products for Possible Purchase

By August 31, you can evaluate four new products HSL is considering for possible purchase:

  • AccessEmergency Medicine is an innovative online service that allows users to quickly search for diagnosis and treatment of a broad range of illnesses and injuries plus technique-oriented videos for teaching, learning, and board review.
  • Mosby's Nursing Consult consolidates books and journals, drug information, patient handouts, practice guidelines, news and evidence-based articles into a single service for clinical nurses, nurse administrators and nursing faculty.
  • Nursing Reference Center is a reference tool designed to provide clinical resources to nurses and other health care professionals at the point of care. It includes Quick Lessons, Evidence-based Care Sheets, drug information, patient education information, nursing guides, illustrations, CE modules, research instruments, and practice guidelines.
  • Procedures Consult is an online procedure reference tool that offers complete details on how to prepare for, perform and follow up on the most common procedures required in today's hospital setting.

To link to these products, view the results of previous evaluations, and enter comments go to: http://www.hsl.unc.edu/evaluation/trials.cfm

New Database: GreenFILE

A recent addition to library databases is GreenFILE, which provides access to materials on the human impact on the environment. Sources include scholarly, governmental, and general interest articles and books. Database items represent research from fields such as agriculture, education, law, health, and technology. Examples of topics covered include climate change, green building, pollution, renewable energy and recycling. To access, enter GreenFILE in the search box at: http://www.hsl.unc.edu/Databases/EIDSearch.cfm

New Tutorial: Plagiarism and Citing Sources

In response to many requests, HSL designed a new tutorial for Health Affairs students on plagiarism and how to properly cite sources: http://www.hsl.unc.edu/services/tutorials/PlagiarismTutorial/intro.html This tutorial incorporates active learning techniques and health and medical examples on this important professional development topic. Please share it with your students and colleagues! To provide comments or questions, contact Julia Shaw-Kokot, Education Services Coordinator at jsk@email.unc.edu

New Clinical Trials Results Summary Database

Part of the FDA Amendments Act of 2007 mandates that ClinicalTrials.gov be expanded to include a clinical trials summary database. The National Library of Medicine has posted a preliminary mockup of the results data entry system, and seeks user input by June 18 before proceeding with the next steps in database development. NLM is most interested in feedback on data items, picklist choices, and whether the described structure is adequate to accommodate all clinical trial designs. To evaluate the mockup, submit comments and be notified when subsequent drafts on database development are posted, go to http://prsinfo.clinicaltrials.gov/rrs-mockup-intro.html

HSL to Partner in Global Health Certificate Program

Mellanye Lackey, Library Liaison for the School of Public Health, will partner with the Global Health Certificate program, a distance education (DE) program. She will create a module within the Ethics course on conducting research using databases and other sources of online information. She will also provide online office hours for DE students to assist with locating online research materials. With more than a decade of experience with distance education, HSL has learned that to support DE students requires a personal contact person, to become familiar with the cohort's needs and for dedicated research assistance.

The Spanish version of NC Health Info http://nchealthinfo.org/es/index.cfm was recently reviewed and accredited by the Health on the Net (HON) Foundation. Web sites that earn the accreditation (called the HONcode seal) represent those that follow rules and basic ethical standards in the presentation of information and help make sure readers always know the source and the purpose of the data they are reading. For more information on HON initiatives go to: http://www.hon.ch/Global

Some authors will be eligible to request up to $1000 to cover these charges from the UNC-Chapel Hill Authors’ Open Access Fund: http://www.hsl.unc.edu/Collections/ScholCom/OAFundAnnounce.cfm Questions? Send via http://www.hsl.unc.edu/asklib/

As of May 25, 2008 researchers must provide the PMCID when citing one of their articles in grant applications, proposals, and progress reports. The recently updated /NIH Public Access Policy Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) provides clear instructions about this requirement: http://publicaccess.nih.gov/FAQ.htm#c6 Should you have any questions about the NIH Public Access Policy, contact HSL’s Ask-A-Librarian service: http://www.hsl.unc.edu/asklib
