Journals Review and Cancellations

As we mentioned in our May E-news, HSL is embarking on a comprehensive review of our journal subscriptions to achieve required cost savings for the next fiscal year. Our foremost goal is to make necessary cuts while having the least impact on our users. We have created a web page that will continually be updated with information about this review process. Throughout the month of June we are asking for your assistance in reviewing our current title subscriptions. A list of potential cancellation candidates will be available on our site soon, along with an online form for you to submit your feedback. Please continue to check our site for updates. Thank you advance for your feedback during this review process.

Information Visualization: Let the HSL Help You See Your Way Forward

The HSL Collaboration Center was recently featured in the June/July issue of ASIST Bulletin, in the article "Information Visualization Services in a Library? A Public Health Case Study". The Collaboration Center is jointly supported by the Health Sciences Library and the Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI) and is one of seven RENCI engagement sites in North Carolina providing visualization infrastructure and expertise. This case study discusses the development of a customized data visualization application in collaboration with Dr. Andrés Villaveces of the UNC Department of Epidemiology and the Injury Prevention Research Center and how it optimized his research. For more information or to schedule a consultation, contact Barrie Hayes, Bioinformatics Librarian and Collaboration Center Manager.

The Health Sciences Library recently hosted Mr.Stanslaus Ngadaya, one of two 2009 MLA Cunningham Memorial International Fellowship awardees . Mr. Ngadaya is the Chief Librarian at Hubert Kairuki Memorial University in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. From May 6-11, he visited UNC and Duke University as part of his exchange with medical libraries in the United States before attending the Medical Library Association (MLA) meeting in Hawaii. UNC's HSL staff benefited from a presentation about the cultural heritage of Tanzania and about Mr. Ngadaya's work in medical librarianship there.

The MLA Cunningham Memorial International Fellowship is a prestigious award for health sciences librarians from countries outside the United States and Canada. The UNC Health Sciences Library frequently hosts Cunningham Fellows during their visits to the United States.

Health Observances/NC Health Info

For information about these health concerns as well as local health care services, programs, and providers to help manage them, see NC Health Info Go Local at: http://nchealthinfo.org

The Benson Reid Wilcox Collection Accessible Online

Dr. Benson Wilcox, a long-time supporter of the Health Sciences Library, particularly in the area of Special Collections, has donated over 1,400 volumes to the Library over the years, including a 1526 edition of the Works of Hippocrates. A profile of Dr. Wilcox is now featured on our Web site, in addition to the complete Benson Reid Wilcox Collection which is available to the Library's thousands of users on campus and is browseable through our online catalog.

Bullitt Club Lectures for 2008-9 Available Online

The Bullitt History of Medicine Club has completed its 2008-9 lecture series, and made the audio portion of each presentation available online as MP3s. The Bullitt Club sponsors a collaborative evening lecture series in conjunction with Duke University's Trent History of Medicine Society, with lectures alternating monthly between the two venues. The Bullitt Club also presents noon-time lectures in months when there is no evening lecture at UNC. The lineup for 2009-10 is currently being prepared, with the first lecture in the new academic year planned for September 2009.

Eugenics Legislation and the NC Digital Catalog

HSL Special Collections, in collaboration with the Carolina Digital Library and Archive, has digitized all volumes of the Biennial Report of the Eugenics Board of North Carolina [1934-1966], as well as North Carolina journals and documents in public health and other areas as part of ongoing digital initiatives. These volumes are of particular note given two bills pending in the North Carolina General Assembly regarding restitution for the state's Eugenics Sterilization Program, which authorized the sterilization of over 7,600 people between 1929 and 1974. The Eugenics Board of North Carolina reviewed petitions for sterilizations and authorized sterilizations in over 90% of cases. For further information, including details on two bills, see the Carolina Curator blog.

New E-Research Tool: Counseling and Therapy in Video

Counseling & Therapy in Video is a new resource that has been added to the E-Research Tools site. This database contains hundreds of hours of streaming videos and accompanying transcripts of therapy sessions, plus training videos, demonstrations, case consultations, lectures, discussions, workshops, and dozens of discussion guides. Sessions are led by leading psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and academics in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K.

Specifically, this collection features more than 175 therapists practicing more than 50 separate therapeutic approaches. From Arnold Lazarus on behavioral therapy to Irvin Yalom on group practice, this database features renowned experts explaining and applying their methods in a variety of real-to-life situations and environments. You can browse the collection by subject, therapist, therapy type, theme, and video type. Because every word in every video is keyword searchable, you can enter a word and jump to the relevant section in the video.

Updated and Expanded Guide: Citing Sources and Writing Tools

Citing Sources and Writing Tools is an online guide that includes links to many online citation resources, new links to a variety of tools for compiling resources, and a new e-books section. The focus is on writing and citing in the sciences and health sciences. The HSL wishes to thank Vicki Behrens, Ph.D., Director of the Writing Center, and Kelli Monahan, recent SILS graduate, for their collaboration in creating this online guide. This new resource is a companion to two other recently updated Health Sciences Library tutorials, Plagiarism and Citing Sources and the Copyright Basics.
