AND THE 2007 WINNER IS …

The Health Sciences Library Award for Distinguished Service was presented to Lynne D. Morris, User Services Librarian during the 10th annual award ceremony. HSL staff who have made outstanding contributions to the library are nominated by their peers. Lynne was cited for her exemplary dedication to impeccable results and the highest of possible standards. Her dedication, professionalism, commitment, exceptional level of service and positive attitude throughout her almost 20 years at the Health Sciences Library, has had a dramatic impact on both staff and patrons alike.

"As noted by a nominator, "for a remarkable number of our "users," Lynne Morris is the Health Sciences Library. She is often the first or only contact that students, faculty, and staff have with the library, whether it is over email, the phone/chat, or in one-on-one consultations. It is safe to say that Lynne is the face of the HSL - and yet most of the people that she helps never actually meet her in person!"

Mrs. Morris will be the library's nominee for the 2007 Chancellor's Award.

EVALUATE OUR PRODUCT OF THE MONTH

Environmental Chemistry - Trial ends May 11, 2007

Environmental Chemistry is a multidisciplinary journal addressing chemical processes of the environment. Articles address fundamental chemistry but contain introductions for non specialists, and thus will appeal to all environmental researchers and policy makers in academia, government, and industry. "SPARCS" FLY AT SCHOLARLY PUBLISHING TALK

UNC Associate Provost and University Librarian Sarah Michalak moderated a distinguished panel in a discussion of "Publishing choices: Know your rights and expand your impact!" held at the Health Sciences Library on April 25. Guest Speaker Heather Joseph, Director of SPARC (The Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition), led off with an overview of the issues, including barriers to making information more accessible to a more diverse audience. SPARC's mission is to educate stakeholders on problems and opportunities for change in scholarly communications.

Also featured were Brad Hemminger, Assistant Professor of Information and Library Science, Deborah Gerhardt, UNC-CH Copyright and Scholarly Communications Director, and Julia Cleaver, Information Services Manager, Ipas Resource Center. Among the 50 participants were staff, faculty, researchers, and students. A video of this timely and informative program will be available soon on the HSL website.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE NC HEALTH INFO TEAM!

COLLABORATION CENTER PROJECT AIDS CANCER RESEARCH

Dr. Bill Kaufmann from UNC's Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center has been working on a new melanoma visualization project with RENCI/HSL (Renaissance Computing Initiative) software developers Hong Yi and Xiaojun Guan. The specific melanoma application promises to aid the general scientific research community in visualizing protein-protein interaction networks in 3-D. Currently there are only 2-D applications for this purpose (e.g Cytoscape). Hong's goal is to develop a very user-friendly and functionality-rich application that it will prove useful to melanoma research as well as lay a foundation for future visualization application development.

USER TIP OF THE MONTH - NEED HELP KEEPING UP WITH THE LITERATURE?

The "Faculty of 1000" services in Biology and Medicine provide an interesting and novel way to stay up-to-date on new research developments and publication of key articles. Faculty experts identify and review what they consider to be the best new publications in both research and clinical areas. The selected papers are tagged with categories such as "Exceptional" or "Must Read." There are also "Top 10", "Most Viewed" and "Hidden Jewels" lists to browse. IN STEP WITH HSL

Congratulations to the intrepid walkers of User Services who won the HSL Pedometer Challenge. Susan Linn was inspired to start the project to encourage better health and fitness in HSL employees by her husband, John Jenkins, who suffered a stroke four years ago and is just re-learning to walk. John walked from his wheelchair to the front of the conference room to present the award and remind us that "People take for granted the ability to walk, and for some people, even one step is a gift."

NEWS FROM NLM

NLM's History of Medicine Division is proud to announce the launch of its newest web exhibit: "Diseases of the Mind: Highlights of American Psychiatry Through 1900". The text was written and images selected primarily by volunteer, Lucy Ozarin, M.D., who served as one of the first women psychiatrists in the U.S. Navy beginning back in 1936. She also worked for many years with the National Institutes of Mental Health before her retirement. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/hmd/diseases/.
