EXAM WEEK EXTRAS!

Friends of the Health Sciences Library is providing library-appropriate snacks from April 28 through May 6. Information will also be available on library services available to UNC students who graduate. Let's continue our relationship! http://www.hsl.unc.edu/Friends/fohslhome.cfm

VISIT HSL ON GRADUATION DAY

Take the opportunity to visit the library with friends and family on Graduation Day, Sunday, May 11. HSL will be open 10 am to 6 pm and the Friends' Café from 1:30 to 5:30 pm.

Now in their third year, all plants in HSL's Sam W. Hitt Medicinal Plant Gardens are enjoying new spring growth and several are in bloom. Most spectacular was the White Fringetree in the corner of the lawn garden near the southwest corner of the building. It was covered with its fringe-like flowers, which have inspired other common names for it like graybeard tree, old-man's-beard, shavings, snowdrop tree, and snowflower. The dried roots and bark were used by Native Americans to treat skin inflammations. Other garden attractions:

  • Foamflowers have delicate white flowers rising above them, and Lily of the Valley still have their little bell-shaped flowers.
  • All of our Raceme Catnip is in full purple bloom--one description says this plant has "a pleasant intoxicating effect in cats, somewhat akin to the effect of marijuana on humans."
  • See, too, the rich blue flowers on our Blue Lungwort. Soon the Coneflowers will bloom. We have several colors, and the Indigo.

Take some moments to relax among the more than 40 different medicinal plants in the gardens. Navigate the website for details: http://www.hsl.unc.edu/Collections/MedicinalGarden/location.htm

SEARCH AREA ACADEMIC LIBRARIES

Borrowing books from area academic libraries just became easier with the debut of Search TRLN (Triangle Research Libraries Network). Get to Search TRLN directly at http://search.trln.org or from the UNC-Chapel Hill Libraries Catalog http://www.lib.unc.edu/webcat/index.html (select "Search TRLN" at the top of the page or "TRLN Libraries" under the dialog box).

Request books held at another TRLN library by using the "Request this item" button to automatically fill in the HSL Interlibrary Loan Form. Your request will be processed and you will be notified when the book arrives at HSL. You will need to set up an HSL ILLiad (Interlibrary Loan) account to use this service and the standard $5 fee will be billed. See previous article.

You can also use the Search TRLN "Request this item" feature to ask for delivery of a book from another UNC-CH library. There is no charge for the book delivery service between campus libraries.

HSL ON FACEBOOK

The UNC Health Sciences Library now has a page on Facebook! Check out the page to learn about the library, search PubMed, view upcoming classes, look at photos from around the library and more. If you have a Facebook account, become a fan and stay up to date with all the events going on at the HSL: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Chapel-Hill-NC/UNC-Health-Sciences-Library/10473632902

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY AND SCIENCE EXHIBIT

An exhibit prepared by the Division of Occupational Science is on display through the end of May on the first floor of the Health Sciences Library. The exhibit highlights a variety of tools and learning materials used in the profession. The Division offers two graduate programs, leading to an M.S. degree in Occupational Therapy and a Ph.D. degree in Occupational Science. The first students of the occupational therapy program graduated from UNC in 1980. For more information, visit the Occupational Science web site at http://www.alliedhealth.unc.edu/ocsci

If your program would like to produce an exhibit to be displayed at HSL for a month or more:

  1. Contact the librarian serving your school or department, http://www.hsl.unc.edu/AboutLib/Staff/LiaisonWebPages/Liaison.cfm
  2. Contact Daniel Smith, Special Collections Librarian, dlsmith@unc.edu

Are you ready to publish an article derived from NIH funding? Want to comply easily with the new Public Access policy?

  1. Check out the growing list of journals that submit to PubMed Central for the author: http://publicaccess.nih.gov/submit_process_journals.htm
  2. Other publishers are starting to change their copyright agreements or place NIH Public Access compliance options on their websites. Here is an example from the American Chemical Society: http://pubs.acs.org/4authors/copyright/nih/index.html
  3. Need help navigating this complex and rapidly changing publishing environment? Send questions or your request for an on site session with a librarian to HSL's Ask a Librarian: http://www.hsl.unc.edu/services/asklib/asklib.cfm

MAY 31 DEADLINE FOR OPEN ACCESS COMMENTS

The National Insitutes of Health issued a request for information (RFI) to seek input on the new Public Access Policy (see FAQ at http://publicaccess.nih.gov/FAQ.htm). This RFI is active from March 31, 2008 to May 31, 2008 on http://publicaccess.nih.gov/comments.htm. The NIH will post analysis and results from this RFI for public view onto http://publicaccess.nih.gov by September 30, 2008.

Awards for Excellence and Service

On March 31, HSL recognized two staff for extraordinary achievements, reliability, character and standards over time. Providing exceptional services for electronic reserves and until recently, many room reservations, Rebecca Miller (on the left) was named the 2008 recipient of the Award of Excellence. A testament to her positive attitude, one nominator said, "Almost no one who contacts her with a need leaves unhappy, even if she tells them no!"

A recipient of HSL's Award of Excellence in 1998, Lynn Eades (on the right) was presented the Library's Distinguished Service Award in recognition of her expertise, dedication to the goals and purposes of the library and exemplary character that is a model to us all. Pictured in the center are Carol Jenkins, HSL Director, and Carol Tresolini, Associate Provost, Academic Initiatives.

At a recent all-staff meeting, Carol Jenkins, HSL Director, presented roses to three HSL employees for years of service.
