Be Counted on Friday Evenings!

The number of people who use the library influences many decisions and building hours are no exception. Friday study hall hours will be offered during spring semester if the history of use is high enough during the trial period that began Oct 5. If you think you'd like to study at HSL on Friday evenings, come on over and be counted!

Although reference help is not always available during study hall hours, you can post a question to Ask-A-Librarian and receive a response within 24 hours on nights and weekends and generally within a few hours between 8 am and 5 pm on weekdays: http://www.hsl.unc.edu/asklib

Construction Alert: South Columbia Street

Beginning the week of Nov 5 or Nov 12, up to two lanes on South Columbia St. between South Road and Manning Drive will be closed for a multi-phased construction project. Due to the lane closures, it may not be possible to drop anyone off in front of the library. Melanie Norton (pictured on the left), HSL's Document Delivery Librarian, served as chair of MAC and master of ceremonies at the annual meeting last month in Baltimore. (Last year, as chair-elect, she worked with Southern Chapter of MLA to host a joint meeting in Atlanta.) The meeting in Baltimore this year had the theme "What'll it be Hon? Libraries a la carte" which explains the creative titles staff used in papers and posters presented: http://www.hshsl.umaryland.edu/mac2007/index.cfm

  • From White Board to Knowledge Base. Karen Crowell et al.
  • Cooking the Numbers: Measuring the Impact of Liaison Services. Francesca Allegri and Stefanie Warlick (former User Services Graduate Assistant)

Kudos to HSL Interlibrary Loan

HSL's Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Department recently won the praise of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Southeastern Atlantic office, by achieving an interlibrary loan fill rate of 80-93%, far exceeding the 75% fill rate standard. Providing items rapidly to those requesting HSL materials is one way the Library provides excellent service to the region and nation, not just to UNC clientele. Beth Westcott, NNLM Access Coordinator, said, "this means your serials holdings are accurate and current, your staff is in place and sets itself high standards, your hardware, software and peopleware have little down time and your established processes work well."

While the praise was specific to service to other libraries, did you know that for a small fee you can request a copy of an article or book chapter owned by any UNC Chapel Hill Library to be delivered to your computer desktop? For more information on Request-a-Copy and other ILL services, visit http://www.hsl.unc.edu/Illiad/ILL.html

NEW HSL SERVICES

U.S. and Campus Mailbox inside Columbia Street Entry

Since late October, campus and U.S. Mail are now picked up from a two-slotted box inside the Columbia Street entrance, in the corner near the exhibit cases. Pick up times are 9:15 am and 1:15 pm on weekdays.

Dead alkaline battery? Bring it to us!

Did you know that an estimated 530,000 pounds of batteries require disposal daily in the United States? There are many reasons why we don't want these to live in landfill soil. The User Services desk is a collection point for dead dry cell (alkaline and manganese or coppertop type) batteries, serviced by UNC's Department of Environmental, Health and Safety unit. For more information about battery recycling and disposal, visit http://ehso.com/ehshome/batteries.php

Global Health Article Collection

Looking for research articles examining interventions and projects to improve health and reduce health care inequities among the poor? For lists of the articles and participating journals, visit the Fogarty International Center. Many of the journals are available in UNC-CH electronic or print journal collections. Check the UNC-CH catalog for library holdings. Articles from journals not owned by campus libraries can be ordered through Interlibrary Loan for $5.
