FRIDAY STUDY HALL
In response to patron requests, the library will be open as a study hall on Friday evenings from 5 until 8 p.m. If use is high enough, Friday study hall hours will be offered Spring semester. Although reference help is not always available during study hall hours, you can post a question to Ask-A-Librarian and receive a response within 24 hours on nights and weekends and generally within a few hours between 8 am and 5 pm on weekdays: http://www.hsl.unc.edu/asklib
The Medical Library Association (MLA) created the observance of National Medical Librarians Month every October to raise awareness about the important role of the health information professional. Many HSL staff will present research findings about improving and expanding our roles and services at the Mid-Atlantic Chapter meeting of the MLA October 9-11 in Baltimore. More details to come in the next issue of HSL e-news.
Part of commemorating National Medical Librarians Month includes recognition of the work of medical librarians associated with the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NNLM). NC Health Info's Military & Families Health Collection received the honor of being selected as one of the featured websites for the Southeastern/Atlantic region of NNLM. Your Reading History
Working on a long-term project and can't remember the name of one of the books you checked out? Through access the My library portal, you now have the option to set up a "reading history." Log in here: https://webcat.lib.unc.edu/patroninfo~S1/ using your ONYEN and password or your PID and PIN, and click on the button to read about the My Reading History feature. If you opt in, any item checked out after setting up the reading history will be retained on a list accessible to you through the my library account. Jason High, Product Training Coordinator for Customer Education, from Thomson Scientific will be offering two training sessions in the Biogen Idec Classroom (HSL Room 307) Monday, Oct 29.
- EndNote Basics: 9-11 am. This class will cover creating a database, organization and use of references. Pre-registration is required.
- Advanced EndNote, drop in session from 1-3 pm. Designed for people who already use EndNote. While some advanced features will be highlighted, this session is designed to answer your specific questions.

HISTORY OF MEDICINE SPEAKER OCT 9 AT DUKE
Dr. Francis A. Neelon will be the featured speaker for the Duke-UNC Collaborative History of Medicine Series on Tuesday, Oct 9. (When hosted by UNC, it's the Bullitt Club and when by Duke, it's the Trent Society.) Neelon's presentation is titled Dr. Stead at Duke, or Life in the Days of the Dinosaurs. (Eugene A. Stead started the Physician's Assistant program at Duke and was known for his unique personality.) The evening program will be held at the Duke University Medical Center Library. MEMORIAL OCT25th FOR DR. GEORGE JOHNSON JR.
A memorial celebration will be held on October 25 for Dr. George Johnson Jr., a longtime Friend of the Health Sciences Library and member of the HSL Board of Visitors. From a biographical summary provided to HSL from the Department of Surgery, he was "renowned as a gifted surgeon, a patient advocate, an exacting and inspiring teacher, an accomplished researcher, a superb administrator, an eminent statesman and a role model for generation of young surgeons." The memorial will be held from 3-5 pm in the first floor Bioinformatics Auditorium with a reception immediately following in the Bioinformatics Lobby. K.T. Vaughan, HSL's Pharmacy Librarian and an expert knitter, recently won in the category of classic hat in the fourth annual Hats with Heart contest, co-sponsored by the Lineberger Patient and Family Resource Center and UNC Hospitals' Women's Health Information Center. The Hats with Heart program provides special home-made hats to cancer patients experiencing hair loss.
