FOCUS ON BIOINFORMATICS@HSL

With the goal of providing move support and service to UNC's growing research in the field of bioinformatics, the Health Sciences Library recently named Librarian Barrie Hayes to assess the scope and status of current efforts as well as plan for future collaborations. In addition to the yearlong special assignment, Barrie will continue to manage the collaboration center http://www.hsl.unc.edu/Collaboration/index.cfm and support efforts documented on the Bioinformatics@HSL page located off of the More Collections link from the HSL home page: http://www.hsl.unc.edu/Collections/Bioinformatics/index.cfm In June 2008 a formal report will be distributed outlining the next steps for developing a more comprehensive HSL Bioinformatics program.

EXTREME MAKEOVER ON NC HEALTH INFO

Finding quality health information online has become easier as a result of an extreme makeover of the NC Health Info interface. The North Carolina Consumer Health Information Task Force found that consumers need more navigational help when searching for health and medical resources online. In an effort to deliver health information to consumers without overwhelming them, the Task Force, in collaboration with academic and public librarians from across the state, recommended major additions to NC Health Info http://nchealthinfo.org . While NC Health Info continues to provide links to local health care providers for health conditions, the site also guides consumers, librarians and other health information professionals to quality information on health topics of particular concern to North Carolinians.

VIDEOCONFERENCE AT HSL

Internet videoconferencing equipment is now installed and ready for use in the Biogen Idec Classroom (HSL Room 307). This installation allows larger groups and more site hook ups than what is available in HSL Room 328. Either room with videoconferencing capability should be reserved via the online room reservation form (http://www.hsl.unc.edu/AboutLib/Building/reservationforms.cfm). After the room is reserved, Classroom Hotline will provide orientation to the equipment.

FUNDS FOR OPEN ACCESS PUBLISHING

Contemplating publishing your next article using the American Chemical Society's "Author Choice" or the PNAS Open Access option or in one of the PLoS journals? Wondering how to cover the related author fees? Support for Open Access author fees up to $1000 per article is available from a fund sponsored by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development. Funds are available to UNC-CH faculty, post-docs, and graduate students who do not have grant funds to cover Open Access publishing costs. Open Access is defined as content available immediately upon publication without subscription charges. The Open Access publishing model is growing in use as more scholars desire to make their work as widely available as possible. The application is available online at http://www.hsl.unc.edu/ScholCom/OpenAccessFundApplication.doc

THESES & DISSERTATIONS: FULL TEXT ONLINE

Beginning Spring 2006, all UNC-Chapel Hill graduate students who wrote a thesis or dissertation were required to submit it both in print and electronically. Health Sciences and Davis Library staff are cataloging the submissions using CONTENTdm software, which enables full text search and browse functions. Spring and Summer 2006 can the viewed via: http://dc.lib.unc.edu/etd/index.php?CISOROOT=/etd One can also access this tool from the Health Sciences website (select More Databases, then enter UNC Electronic Theses and Dissertations in the search box) or similarly from the UNC-Chapel Hill Libraries website (select E-Research Tools and entering the name in the search box).

USING REFWORKS OFF CAMPUS

Have you tried using RefWorks' Write-N-Cite (WNC) from off campus? To successfully use this feature you first need to download the WNC utility as outlined in Step 4 on the Quick Tips page: http://www.hsl.unc.edu/Services/guides/refworkstips.cfm#Step_4 If you have more questions, consider signing up for the RefWorks class on September 27 (see Upcoming HSL Classes below) or schedule an individual consultation.
