Connecting Personal Laptops in the Library

Where are the network drops?

There are network connections in the study rooms on first, second, third and fourth floors and in the Electronic Information Center on first. There are also network connections throughout the library. Active drops are noted by a green dot next to the jack.

Who can connect to these drops?

Your laptop must be configured to be part of the UNC network. Users should have their machines configured by their home department or through the Mobile Computing group. The library DOES NOT configure laptops for people.

What if my laptop is configured but cannot connect?

If your laptop is not configured for DHCP, you probably need to have the configuration set up for DHCP. Check with your home department.

Sometimes people have trouble connecting with their home department's DHCP server. A quick reconnection can help.

To reconnect, do the following with a laptop that is already jacked in. Windows 9X: Go to Start, to Run and type in "winipcfg". Then click OK. When a dialog box appears, click "Release All". You will see the information in the top of the box change. Then click "Renew All" and close the window. See if the person can connect now. If not, repeat the process. Windows 2000: Go to Start, to run and type in ipconfig /release. Wait until the black window dissappears. Then, type ipconfig /renew.

If this doesn't work, many things could be responsible. The user should return to his/her IT department for assistance.
