Customizing EndNote Output Styles to Include PMC Numbers

Because of recent changes to NIH Public Access Policy guidelines you must include PubMed Central (PMC) numbers when citing these articles in progress reports, renewals, and new applications . The following step by step guide will assist you in customizing any EndNote output style to include PMC numbers.

Please visit the NIH Public Access Policy (http://publicaccess.nih.gov/) for additional information regarding changes in this policy.

Select an Output Style to Edit

You can select any output style, the process is the same for each output style. For this example we will use the APA 5th Style.

Click on Edit > Output Style > Edit “APA 5th ” OR

Click on Edit > Output Style > “Open Style Manager” > select the style that you want to modify then click the Edit button

Create a new library

Rename/Save As

When you have selected the output style that you want to modify go to

File > Save As > and rename the output style

For our example we will use the name "APA 5th with PMCID".

It is important to rename the style and use Save As so that the original output style is not lost.

Main EndNote library screen

After your style has been saved, select Templates under Bibliography from the column at the left of the window.

EndNote data record

Modifying the Template

In EndNote each reference type has a template that is used to generate the Bibliography. In order to see the PMC numbers in the bibliography you must modify the templates of the reference types used. For our example we will modify a Journal Article template to include the PMC number as indicated by the NIH guidelines (http://publicaccess.nih.gov/FAQ.htm).

Place your cursor at the end of the Journal Article record template

Press the spacebar then enter `PMCID:` PMC. (The ` symbol must be made using the tilde key).

When you finished, close the window. You will be prompted to save the modifications that you made at that time.

Import Filter

Be sure to use the newly modified Import Filters when importing citations from PubMed or PubMed Central. You can download the new filters from the EndNote website (http://endnote.com/support/faqs/import/faq15.asp).
