From Washington University Medical Center, this fact sheet includes helpful information for medical professionals to consider when working with Latino patients. The information sheet highlights some of the major cultural differences that can cause communication barriers including body language, sensitive health topics and family issues.

North Carolina AHEC Latino Health Resource Center

This Website is part of the North Carolina AHEC Spanish Language and Cultural Training Initiative, a statewide collaborative effort to promote increased Spanish fluency and related cultural competencies among North Carolina health professionals. Links offered through this site include information on disease specific topics such as AIDS and Cancer. Links to local and national support groups and educational materials are also included.

Hispanic American Health Beliefs and Practices

From Charles Kemp, a specialist in refugee and immigrant health at Baylor University, this site is a well documented resource for topics relating to Hispanic health beliefs and practices. Cultural information on communication, social relations, social problems and risk topics for immigrants is included. Citations and external links provide resources for further research.

Pew Hispanic Center Health Resources

Part of The Pew Charitable Trusts, The Pew Hispanic Center provides resources that improve the understanding of the U.S. Hispanic population. Health resources include links to information about current trends in Hispanic health as well as some information about cultural views on health issues.

ADL: Minority Health Special Collection

This website is part of the AHEC Digital Library, a dynamically generated customized web site designed to be the first choice portal to the Internet for all North Carolina healthcare professionals. Education tools and topics for Hispanic Americans are provided. This site also offers up to date links to online resources for Spanish language patient materials, suggested health sites and support groups.

Centers for Disease Control

Selected patient education materials from the CDC are also available in Spanish here. Website information is translated so that Spanish speaking users can navigate the resources provided here. Topics include allergies, tobacco, illness, immunizations, mental health, dental topics and more.

Healthfinder

From the Department of Health and Human Services, this site contains specially selected health information with an A to Z index. Topics such as prevention & wellness, diseases & conditions, and alternative medicines are provided. Additional resources include medical dictionaries, an encyclopedia, journal access, and more. Special health topics are organized by age from kids to seniors as well as by race and ethnicity. Information about doctors, dentists, public clinics, hospitals, long term care, nursing homes, health insurance, prescriptions, health fraud, Medicare, Medicaid, and medical privacy are also included. The site also provides a directory of Healthfinder organizations and carefully selected health information Websites from government agencies, clearinghouses, nonprofits, and universities. This site, a collaboration between the University of Utah Health Science Center and the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library, provides patient education materials on various topics in Spanish.

LANIC: Latin American Network Information Center - Health Medical Sciences resources

Created and maintained by the Department of Latin American Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, this site contains numerous links to health information on the internet. LANIC is available in English, Spanish and Portuguese and includes links to country specific sites as well as links to information on specific topics including HIV/AIDS, cancer and pharmaceuticals.

MEDLINEplus: Hispanic American Health

From the National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health, this is a first-rate site with links to information on diseases, conditions, and wellness issues related to Hispanic Americans. News information is kept up to date. Many of the resources available from MEDLINEplus are also available in Spanish here. Users can also select the “españolâ€� link for translated pages.

NOAH: New York Online Access to Health

Originally funded by the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and created in collaboration with early partners, NOAH strove to establish itself as a unique, responsible and authoritative bilingual health information site, dedicated to an underserved population of health consumers, many of whom are also Spanish speaking. NOAH's contributing partners are: The City University of New York, The Metropolitan New York Library Council, The New York Academy of Medicine and The New York Public Library. The main NOAH Website is bilingual.

National Center for Health Statistics - Health of Hispanic/Latino Population

From the Centers for Disease Control and the National Center for Health Statistics, this site provides users with statistical information on the health of the Hispanic/Latino population in the United States taken from CDC reports. Link to others reports are also included for further research.

The Office of Minority Health - Latino/Hispanic Profile

From the Department of Health and Human Services, this site offers healthcare providers a resource for special issues relating to Latino health. Statistical data on health and social issues in the Latino population as well as links to more detailed data sites are included.

US Census Bureau - Facts on the Latino or Hispanic Population

This site provides a collection of links to statistical data relating to various facets of the Latino or Hispanic community. Links to reports and data are updated and provide access to the latest government statistics on the Latino or Hispanic community.
