PharmGKB: The Pharmacogenetics and Pharmacogenomics Knowledge Base
- "PharmGKB is a publicly available Internet research tool developed by Stanford University with funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and is part of the NIH Pharmacogenetics Research Network (PGRN), a nationwide collaborative research consortium. Its aim is to aid researchers in understanding how genetic variation among individuals contributes to differences in reactions to drugs."
- NCBI Entrez Databases via PubMed
- The National Center for Biotechnology Information maintains more than 15 databases of use to molecular biologists,
geneticists, and others researching genetic and protein sequences. These include the RefSeq and GenBank DNA/RNA depositories,
the Protein Data Bank, dbSNP, and the Conserved Domains Database. Please see the library's NCBI Entrez Global Search Portal guide for brief itemDescs of the major offerings.

Nucleic Acids Research Molecular Biology Database Collection
Every January the journal Nucleic Acids Research collates, indexes, and summarizes new or revised databases available for research in molecular biology, genetics, genomics, and proteomics. The total list of databases is free and online in the MBDC.
- National Institute of General Medical Sciences: Research Funding: Pharmacogenetics Research Network
- "The Pharmacogenetics Research Network (PGRN) is a nationwide collaboration of scientists studying the effect of genes on people's responses to a wide variety of medicines." This site conatins links to the research network proper as well as other communities, funding opportunities, news and hot topics discussions, and various other resources for researchers.
- Pharmacogenomics: Medicine and the New Genetics
- This site is aimed more at the consumer or neophyte than at the researcher in pharmacogenomics, and thus provides some nice overviews of the premises of pharmacogenomics, benefits and ethical issues, and "barriers to progress." A nice collection of links to more resources at the end of the page leads to more resources appropriate (primarily) for nonscientists.
- PubMed (MEDLINE)
PubMed, a service of the National Library of Medicine, includes over 14 million citations for biomedical articles back to the 1950's. These citations are from MEDLINE and additional life science journals. PubMed includes links to many sites providing full text articles and other related resources.
- International Pharmaceutical Abstracts
International Pharmaceutical Abstracts is produced by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists and includes information from over 750 pharmaceutical, medical, and
health-related journals published worldwide since 1970. The database covers the entire spectrum of drug therapy and pharmaceutical information so researchers such as
toxicologists, those in cosmetic companies, medical librarians and health practitioners can easily locate the answers to any drug-related problems that they encounter. Topics
covered include information on biopharmaceutics & pharmacokinetics, new drug delivery systems, pharmacist liability, legal, political & ethical issues, and many others.
Examples of titles covered in IPA include: America's Pharmacist (USA), American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy (USA), British Medical Journal (England), Clinical Drug
Investigation (New Zealand), Clinical Pharmacokinetics (New Zealand), International Journal of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics (Germany), International Journal of
Pharmaceutical Compounding (USA), International Journal of Pharmaceutics (Netherlands), etc. A unique feature of abstracts included for clinical studies is the inclusion of the study design, number of patients, dosage, dosage forms, and dosage schedule. (Source: vendor website.)
- BIOSIS (BasicBIOSIS)
BasicBIOSIS covers 350 of the basic core of life science journals most easily found in college and university libraries. These journals were chosen because they are written for non-biology majors and can be easily understood by undergraduates. The database includes popular science titles not covered in other BIOSIS databases. BasicBIOSIS is a specialized database created for FirstSearch subscribers. This database is copyrighted by Biological Abstracts Inc. (BIOSIS). BasicBIOSIS contains references from virtually every life science discipline, including: agriculture, biochemistry, biology, biotechnology, botany, ecology, environment, genetics, medicine, microbiology, neuroscience, nutrition, physiology, and public health. Selected Electronic Journals:
- The library has a wide selection of journals available for your use, both in print and electronically. The titles selected below
are specifically focused on pharmacogenomics and genetics. Many general genetics and human genetics/genomics journals
are also available electronically. Please search the Catalog for
print journals and the E-Journal Finder for
electronic journals.
