Drug Identification & Monographs

Drugs are commonly categorized by pharmacological action, therapeutic or diagnostic use, or by chemical derivation or affiliation. For broad category access, pharmaceutical information is generally organized by action and use.

The below resources are broad reference databases for drugs, and include information on all three classification types as well as other important information such as contraindications, interactions, and dosing.

Lexi-Comp Online UNC Access ONLY
Lexi-Comp Online provides you with content in the following areas: drug information and interactions, laboratory and diagnostic tests, natural products, infectious diseases, and poisoning & toxicology. The Lexi-Drug ID section has a medications lookup by imprint, dosage form, shape, and/or color. The databases are updated daily.

eFacts UNC Access ONLY
eFacts provides online access to Drug Facts and Comparisons, Drug Interaction Facts, The Review of Natural Products and Med Facts: Patient Information. Drug information, interactions, herbal information, and patient medication handouts are seamlessly updated and can be customized to suit your needs. The Advanced Drug Identification page allows searching by drug name, manufacturer, imprint, color, shape, scoring, and/or NDC code.

MICROMEDEX UNC Access ONLY
MICROMEDEX Healthcare Series is a compilation of databases designed to support clinical decision making by providing comprehensive drug, acute care, and toxicology information. Databases include: POISINDEX, DRUGDEX, EMERGINDEX, PDR, Martindale, TOMES, and Drug-Reax, and the drug information tools: Martindale's, PDR, Material safety data sheets prepared by the U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention, and Index nominum. NOTE: This database is ONLY AVAILABLE ON CAMPUS.

MedlinePlus Drugs, Supplements, and Herbal Information
MedlinePlus includes consumer-appropriate drug information from the MedMaster drug guide. In addition, information on herbals and supplements is presented from National Standard. Information is also available for newly approved drugs and drugs currently in clinical research studies.

Mayo Clinic Drugs & Supplements
The Mayo Clinic presents drug information from the MICROMEDEX Patient Care Leaflets. There is also an archive of Drug Watch articles and information on herbals and supplements from Natural Standard.

Drugs@FDA
This database catalogs all US FDA approved drugs, including both prescription and over the counter medications, with information about equivalent products, active ingredients, label information, and each drug's approval history.
