About Cochrane

"The Cochrane Collaboration is an international, non-profit, independent organisation, established to ensure that up-to-date, accurate information about the effects of healthcare interventions is readily available worldwide. It produces and disseminates systematic reviews of healthcare interventions..."
Cochrane Collaboration Newcomer's Guide

Cochrane systematic review authors follow a published procedure to form a clinical question, extensively search for pertinent research, select and assess research that meets identified criteria, perform meta-analysis on collected data if possible, and comprehensively publish findings in a standardized report. The Cochrane procedure has become the gold standard for systematic reviews of interventions.

Oral Health Review Group

The Cochrane Oral Health Review Group focuses on producing systematic reviews covering "the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of oral, dental and craniofacial diseases and disorders." Cochrane Oral Health Group Home Page

A list of published reviews, now numbering over 60, with links to abstracts and plain language summaries is available on the group's website. There are also lists of reviews being refereed, published protocols, protocols being refereed, and registered titles.

Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews

The CDSR contains the most recent editions of published reviews from all topic groups, now numbering about 5000. The database also includes published refereed protocols with the introduction, background, objectives and methods sections for reviews currently in process.

Access to the full text of reviews and protocols is limited to subscribers. UNC-CH Health Sciences Library provides access for current faculty, staff and students. A link to Cochrane can be found on HSL's More Databases page and on the Dentistry Reference page.

Browse reviews and protocols "By Topic" or "By Review Group" to get an overview of available content. The "By Topic" browse presents reviews and protocols in more specific topics under the broader review group areas.

When searching for dental topics remember to narrow the focus of the search:

  • Dental Sealants instead of Sealants
  • Dental Anxiety instead of Anxiety

Reviews are presented on a webpage with links on the side to the standard sections of a Cochrane review. A PDF version is linked at the top of this sidebar.

Be careful to check the number of pages before printing out the entire review. Many are quite long!
