Alone: Consequences for Information Support

While certain groups may exist among community members, members of a specific group may not identify with each other. Although many community members reported a network of acquaintances, they remain reluctant to reveal very much about themselves or freely offer information. Not only does this play into the observed reluctance among community members to talk with the investigators; it may explain part of the difficulty new community members have in obtaining service information (see Social Networks, Friendships, and Family Ties above) and their expressed need for information on available services. Because service providers similarly acknowledged the need for educating community members and communication between service providers and community members, this may be a productive point of intervention.
