Hi, my name is ___________ and I'm a student in the School of Public Health (at UNC). This year we have been talking to a lot of people about the causes and solutions for homelessness. We have been talking to people living in challenging situations dealing with problems such as hunger, joblessness, and inadequate housing. We have also been talking with service providers from places such as Lincoln, the Shelter for Hope, the Community Kitchen, the Rescue Mission, and others.
We would like to invite you to come to a community get-together on April 6th to talk about these important issues. We've also invited the providers that we talked with to come too. We really hope you will come and share your views, your opinions and suggestions. They'd be a VERY important contribution to our discussion.
Would you [be interested] in coming?
We'll be meeting at the Community Service Center on the corner of Holloway Street and N. Hyde Park. The entrance is around the back. It will be on Friday at 1 pm.
Will you need transportation? Do you know how to get there? (We will have a shuttle to run from the Community Kitchen to the Community Center.)
We'll be serving pie and coffee, and other snacks and beverages. We'll also have great door prizes for all attendees.
We really hope you'll come!
Would you be able to help us invite some of your friends about this event? (Give them some invitations.)
Hi, my name is ________. I'm a graduate student in the School of Public Health at UNC. Since last September we have been learning about homelessness issues and talking with service and health care providers, as well as homeless community members.
We've done interviews and focus groups and volunteer work and have more questions than answers as a result of our work. We sent out an invitation to you a few days ago about our "Community Dialogue on Homelessness" next Friday from 1-3 pm and was wondering if you had received it and are planning to go….
It is an informal gathering to create an opportunity for professionals/providers like you to discuss your views and to hear the views of others regarding the causes and solutions to homelessness in Durham. We really hope you will come and share your views and your opinions. Your ideas would make an important contribution to our discussion.

Who We Are:
We are a team of graduate students in the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As part of our program, we are partnering with St. Philip's Community Kitchen and Durham Health Partners to complete an Action-Oriented Community Diagnosis in Durham. We have spent this past year speaking with service providers who help community members facing challenging situations and with community members who use those services. The purpose of today's discussion is to bring together a diverse range of people whose lives are affected by what society calls "homelessness." Our team will share some of the common themes that emerged from our conversations with you, and everyone will be given the opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas on this topic.

INTRODUCTION: There are no right or wrong answers. We can all learn from each other and share our ideas and experiences.
-- Remember to count to 10 after a question. If no responses, try a related question, or repeat the question, probe, etc. (If you are the facilitator, do not answer the question yourself!).
--Feel free to pick and chose questions within each category or make up your own!
OBSERVATION(Validate, acknowledge all responses. Keep going with this first topic until everyone has shared something - this gets everyone's voice in the group.)
REFLECTION/GUT REACTION--Choose a spokesperson (or two) to report back to the larger group.
*ORID is a discussion method that guides a group, through a progression of questions, from initial observations, guided by thought processes, to action steps. ORID is meant to serve as a structure for effective communication that provides for meaningful dialogue, broadens perspectives, results in clear ideas and conclusions, and allows the entire group to participate.
The facilitators explain their roles, the role of the other students and our purpose to observe and not speak up as much. They will then introduce the groundrules right before the icebreaker and explain that they will apply to the rest of the forum.
