Emergency services are an important resource to the homeless in Durham. Services include provision of food, shelter, clothing, money for rent, medical and mental health care, and drug treatment services. Emergency services can often overlap with transitional services. Frequently, though not exclusively, these services are provided or sponsored by religious organizations. The St. Philip's Community Kitchen, housed within the Urban Ministries Center, provides the only emergency kitchen in Durham. They provide two meals every weekday and lunch on Saturday. Shield of Faith serves a meal to the homeless following their Sunday worship services. Various service agencies such as, the Salvation Army and the Durham County Mission Society of the United Methodist Church, operate food pantries to provide food to those in need in Durham. The Durham Rescue Mission and the Community Shelter for H.O.P.E. are the two emergency shelters in Durham. The Durham Rescue Mission, a Christian non-profit organization, provides shelter to those individuals interested in entering into a seven-month rehabilitation program. The Community Shelter for H.O.P.E. provides shelter on a night-by-night basis, charging roughly $8 per night. There is limited room at the Shelter for H.O.P.E., so beds are available on a first-come basis. Women in Action for the Prevention of Violence and its Causes offers limited emergency financial assistance to for rent, utilities, and medication. The Durham County Mission Society and the Salvation Army provide clothing for the homeless and those in need.
