Rehabilitation Services

People often assume that the primary cause of homelessness is alcoholism or other substance abuse problems. However, it is difficult to estimate the number of homeless and shelter users who are substance abusers. In Durham, 14.9 percent of adult residents in Durham are estimated to have substance abuse problems, but that number may or may not be higher among the homeless community members.

When substance abusers, both homeless and non-homeless, are ready to seek help, an array of providers are available, such as the Durham Community Prevention Partnership - a grant-funded initiative targeting high-risk areas of the city with substance abuse prevention programs. TROSA, a two-year residential rehabilitation facility serves the Durham community. A long list of outpatient services also exist - The Durham Center, Duke University Medical Center, Veterans Affairs Medical Center Substance Abuse Program (available to Veterans), and Durham Regional Hospital, are just a few. The Durham Center also runs a crisis line that answers calls regarding substance abuse.
