There was some discussion about the question of whether mental health issues lead to homelessness or whether the stress of life on the street can be dangerous to one's mental health. Several informants felt that the extent of both substance abuse and mental health problems among community members is greatly over-estimated. They felt that community members with substance abuse and mental health problems would be more likely to seek help and to use shelters and other services, while community members without these issues would be more likely to be the "non-shelter" homeless.
