Tema #5: Hablar un idioma diferente y tener una cultura diferente hace difícil la interacción de Latinos con negocios, servicios públicos, y el sistema de salud de los Estados Unidos.

Yesenia es una mujer mexicana de treinta y tres años de edad quien se movió a Fuquay-Varina hace un año. En los ultimos dos dias se ha estado sientiendo muy mal, como enferma, cansada, débil, y con un poco de fiebre. Esta mañana, ella se despertó con door de garganta y trató de tratarse con té y remedios naturales. Al fínal del día, el dolor fue estaba peor; entonces, ella dicidió que necesitaba ver un médico. Cuando regresó su esposo a la casa, ellos manejaron a la clínica que se encontraba a dos millas de la casa.

Cuando llegaron a la clínica, Yesenia trató de explicar los síntomas que tenía y como se sentía. La recepcionista hablaba un poquito de español y trató de traducir, pero había una gran falta de comunicación y entendimiento. Ellos hicieron analisis de la garganta y de sangre, pero nadie se lo pudo explicar y tampoco pudo hacer preguntas. Al fín de la visita, ellos dijeron a Yesenia que no necesitaba medicamento y que todo estaria mejor en unos días. Cuando fue a pagar por los servicios, le costo $125 dolares. Ella preguntó a la recepcionista por que la cuenta era tan cara y si ni siquiera recibió medicamento. La recepcionista le dijo a ella que la cuenta fue por el costo del examen y los analisis de la sangre. Que su condición no requiria ningun medicamento.

Theme: Speaking a different language and having a different culture make it difficult for Latinos to interact with businesses, public services, and the health system in the United States.

Yesenia is a 33-year-old woman from Mexico who moved to Fuquay-Varina about a year ago. Over the past couple of days, she has been feeling ill, tired, weak, and even a little feverish. This morning, she woke up with a sore throat and tried to treat herself with some tea and natural remedies. By the end of the day, the pain was even worse, so she decided she needed to see a doctor. When her husband got home, she had him drive her to the clinic about five miles away.

When they arrived at the clinic, Yesenia tried to explain her symptoms and how she was feeling. The receptionist spoke a little Spanish and tried to translate, but there was a great lack of communication and understanding. Yesenia had lab work done, but no one explained it to her, and she felt like she couldn't ask any questions. At the end of the appointment, they told Yesenia that she didn't need any medicine and that everything would get better in a few days. When she went to check out, the bill was $125. She asked the receptionist why it was so expensive and why she didn't get any medication. The receptionist said that the cost was because of the exam fee, the throat test and blood test that they did, and that her condition didn't require any medication.
