Fuquay-Varina | A38: Resources in Fuquay-Varina*Amigos en Cristo (Friends in Christ) Offers services to the Latino community of Fuquay-Varina. These services include English as a Second Language (ESL) classes provided at various times throughout the week. This effort is a joint partnership with Wake Technical Community College that has been very popular with Latinos. Early Learning Center Provides early education, health and family development services, including full-day childcare, to families. The educational target is to address the developmental needs of children through the age of 5. The Center has funds to supply tuition for low-income families. Specifically, this agency is seeking to enroll Latino children into the assistance program and in the Center overall. Fuquay-Varina Area Chamber of Commerce Provides multiple services to local businesses, with the primary aim of improving and increasing commerce in the Fuquay-Varina area. Such services include an Economic Development Advisory Cabinet, Business Development Unit, Newcomer Information, Education Council, and Business After Hours networking program. Fuquay-Varina Athletic Association Promotes and sponsors youth sports and activities in the Fuquay-Varina area. The hope is that children may be given the opportunity to participate in physical exercise and receive instruction in the basic fundamentals of sports, teamwork, and good sportsmanship. Fuquay-Varina Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources Department Oversees a wide variety of programs and facilities for year-round activities in the Fuquay-Varina area. This responsibility includes the management and maintenance of local parks and athletic programs in town. Fuquay Youth Initiative Provides an after-school program for children in grades 6 through 8, operating during the school year and on an extended hours daily schedule during the summer. The children play games, learn different skills (such as cooking), and participate in community service as part of this program. This organization is actively seeking increased participation from Latino children. Hispanic Outreach Ministry Serves the Latino community of Fuquay-Varina in many capacities, including migrant health care and ESL classes. Furthermore, a Spanish mass is performed once on Sunday afternoons, a time during which many Latinos gather to worship. Transportation is provided to migrant farm workers for health needs and for attendance at mass. Pine Acres Community Center Provides an array of services to the community of Fuquay-Varina, including an after-school tutorial program for children ages 8 to 12 who receive tutoring and a hot meal, a Meals-on-Wheels program providing meals to senior adults, and other opportunities. Children ride directly from their schools to the Center on school buses. The Center is aiming to recruit more Latino children and senior adults to participate in their programs. Southern Regional Center (SRC) Provides health and clinical services in the areas of family medicine, school health, prenatal care, WIC (nutrition education and grocery vouchers), women's health, migrant health, HIV/STD testing and counseling, immunizations, and mental health/substance abuse. In addition, the SRC has services for crisis intervention, economic assistance, environmental health, register of deeds, and employment/job counseling. *This list of local resources is not exhaustive but encapsulates the services specifically mentioned during interviews and focus groups.
