Managing E-Mail
  Wednesday, January 24, 10:30 - Noon, HSL Room 307
Email is a key correspondence tool while developing the research proposal and communicating after the award. However, email can become over-whelming and take us away from valuable research/administration time. This seminar will discuss how to use e-mail more effectively. Learn to write better e-mail messages to get your point across. Then, apply folders and a retention schedule to pare down and prioritize a bloated inbox.

Finding Resources
  Thursday, February 15, 1:30-3:00 pm, HSL Room 307
How do you choose which database to use? What if the journal is not available electronically? How do you find the full-text of an article? We'll cover these topics and more to get the research process started. Stay organized throughout the literature search.

Organizing and Managing Citations
  EndNote - Tuesday, March 6, 10-11:30am, HSL Room 307
  RefWorks - Wednesday, March 7, 3-4:30pm, HSL Room 329
It's great to find lots of articles, but you'll need to keep track of them and make a bibliography at some point. Learn how to import citations and pdf's from databases into a citation manager for easy access, Use folders to organize citations, find out how to effortlessly create bibliographies and cite while you write. We'll discuss the differences between RefWorks and EndNote. This seminar will have two sessions; participants can choose which to attend.

The first session will cover EndNote, available for purchase at the student stores for use on a personal computer. EndNote is helpful for long-term research and dissertation-length projects. Users will have access to their citations after their UNC accounts expire, since they've bought the software.

The second will cover RefWorks. RefWorks is accessible with internet access anywhere in the world, free while at UNC and great for groups.

All About Poster Presentations
  Monday, March 26, 1:30-3:00pm, HSL Room 307
Great posters are about more than showing results and inserting graphics. Get primed on the effective organization, design and layout of your research project. This session will include an orientation to the Health Sciences Library's Media Design Studio, where you can make and print posters.

Moving from the Research to Writing the Article
  Wednesday, April 18, 1-2:30pm, HSL Room 329
Get tips on how to move your research results to the journal article or to a lay article. How can you condense years of research into a five page article? How do you select a journal? How do you organize and get ready for the writing? How can you clone the work to publish in multiple journals?

Scholarly Publishing

How do you choose where to publish? Understand the legal-ese of that license you're about to sign? Can you post your own work on your personal website? Can you use an author's agreement to retain rights to your own work? Does copyright affect you? How much do you know about Open Access? Is it a good option for publishing your work?
