The Media Design Studios are open during library hours for registered users. Please follow the procedures, outlined below, to ensure proper and ongoing use of the Studios. The Library reserves the right to rescind Studios privileges given just cause.

1. Reserve a Media Design Studio computer. To reserve a Media Design Studio computer, complete the online Room Reservation form. This step is recommended to ensure a computer will be available when you arrive, but it is not required.

2. Check out a key. To check out a key to one of the studios, go to the User Services desk on the first floor of the library. You will need your UNC One card or hospital badge to check out a key.

The studios are open during library hours. Keys are available on a walk-in basis when there are no reservations for the workstations. You need to finish your work and return the key 15 minutes before the library closes OR the next reservation.

3. Work in the Media Design Studio. Once you have a key, you are free to use any of the available computers and software in the Media Design Studio of your choice. Note: Keep track of time! You need to turn in your key (or renew it) to avoid an overdue charge!

Saving your work: Bring a disk with you to save your work. For your convenience, you may save your files temporarily in the MyDocuments folder on the hard drive, but files in that directory are periodically deleted. HSL is not responsible for the security of any files that you create.

Getting Help: If you have difficulties, please contact us via the online problem reporting form. If a specialist is available, we will try to resolve your problem or answer your question. (Note: User Services desk staff do not support the Media Design Studios). For help learning software applications, we strongly recommend that you request a consultation or attend a class.

Keeping the room secure: While you are in the Media Design Studio, please keep the door closed. You are responsible for what goes on in the studio during the time you have the key. Letting someone in who has not checked out a key could jeopardize your future access to the MDS.

Feel free to take a break, but make sure the door is closed and locked while you are outside the room.

Printing your work: Both Studios are equipped with a color printer. Printing is $0.25 per page, regardless of whether you print in color or black and white. Please use the printing forms provided, and pay at the User Services desk when you return the key. Poster printing is a special case; please see our Printing Your Poster page for more information.

Finishing your work: When you are finished, be sure to save your work on removable media. Then exit the programs you are using.

When you leave the Media Design Studio, make sure the door is closed and locked.

4. Return the key.   Return the key to the User Services desk on the first floor when you are through. Be sure to hand the key to someone at the desk for immediate check-in.

5. Give us your feedback!    We may contact you to ask you about your use of the Media Design Studios. Your feedback is important to us, and is used in decisions about services we will offer in the future.
