Specialized Alternatives Databases
Databases that contain materials specifically relevant to the reduction, refinement, and replacement of animals in laboratory
research and teaching will be of particular utility to your literature search. These databases have been created and are maintained
by a variety of groups, including the U.S. government, universities in the U.S. and abroad, and private research institutes. You will
find that these databases will cover a broader range of publication formats than commercial databases, including videotapes and
software packages in addition to peer-reviewed articles.
ALTBIB: Bibliography on Alternatives to the Use of Live Vertebrates in
Biomedical Research and Testing - U.S. National Library of Medicine Specialized Information Services
"The intent of the bibliography is to assist in identifying methods and procedures helpful in supporting the development,
testing, application, and validation of alternatives to the use of vertebrates in biomedical research and toxicology testing.
This bibliography is produced from MEDLARS database searches, performed and analyzed by subject experts from the Toxicology
and Environmental Health Information Program (TEHIP) of the Specialized Information Services Division (SIS) of the National
Library of Medicine (NLM)."

AltWeb Pain Management Database - Johns Hopkins Center
for Alternatives to Animal Testing
"This database includes information about anesthesia and analgesia for most commonly used laboratory animals, including:
rats, mice, primates, dogs, cats, rabbits, pigs, guinea pigs, birds, sheep, fish, and exotic species. It provides information
about available drugs and the side effects of commonly used drugs. Citations are from publications that have published
laboratory animal studies or human clinical studies with relevance to animal research." The database contains over 10,000
records, and is updated quarterly using records from MEDLINE, TOXLINE, AGRICOLA, and AGRIS.
ICCVAM / NICEATM Test Method Evaluations - NIH Interagency
Coordinating Committee on the Validation of Alternative Methods & The National Toxicology Program Interagency Center for
the Evaluation of Alternative Toxicological Methods
Included are fewer than ten alternative test methods that have been submitted to ICCVAM for review and evaluation. They
contain "information about the reviews of these tests, the respective categories of toxicity, and/or the ICCVAM Working
Group assigned to the assays."
INVITRODERM: Alternatives to Skin Irritation / Corrosion Testing in Animals
"This not-for-profit website has been developed to display information about alternatives to skin irritation / corrosion
testing in animals. The site currently contains approximately 360 abstracts about this topic from peer-reviewed scientific
journals. Nothing has been published here without the permission of the appropriate publisher or author."
NORINA: Norwegian Inventory of Alternatives - The Norwegian
Reference Centre for Laboratory Animal Sciences & Alternatives
"NORINA (A Norwegian Inventory of Alternatives) provides information on over 3500 audiovisual aids and other alternatives
such as computer programs to the use of animals or animal products in teaching, at all levels from junior [elementary]
school to university." Search help available.
NCA: Netherlands Centre Alternatives to Animal Use Database
"The NCA database comprises 3Rs research projects. These projects were originally funded by the Dutch Platform on Alternatives
to Animal Experiments. Currently, these projects are funded by the Programme committee on Alternatives to Animal Experiments
of the Dutch Health and Research Council."
Refinement and Enrichment for All Laboratory Animals
Database - Animal Welfare Institute
"This information resource is a merger of two databases on refinement & enrichment for non-primate and primate laboratory
animals. It disseminates reference material on all aspects of refinement of housing and handling conditions and environmental
enrichment for all animals kept in research, testing and teaching institutions. Refinement is the attempt to enhance animal
welfare and control extraneous variables that may increase research data variability. Environmental enrichment is the
provision of stimuli that promote the expression of species-appropriate behavioral and mental activities. This database
comprises published articles, abstracts, book chapters, books, photos, and videotapes. Entries have been read/screened and
annotated by the authors to guarantee their relevance to the topic."
