Using PowerPoint

Getting Started | Adding and Revising Content | Printing Your Poster

Adding and Revising Content

1. Add text. First, create a text box by clicking and dragging with the text box tool .
The text box tool is in the Drawing toolbar. (If you don't see the drawing toolbar, choose
View menu > Toolbars > Drawing to display the drawing toolbar.

Then enter text by copying and pasting from another program (such as Word) or by typing directly into your text box.

2. Add bullets.

  • You can create a bulleted list by clicking inside the text box where you want the bullets and then clicking the Bullets button on the text toolbar. You can also add bullets by choosing Format > Bullets and Numbering and selecting the style of bullets you want.

  • If your bulleted text wraps to the next line, you may want to indent the second and subsequent lines to line up with the first one. To do so, first make sure the ruler is visible when you click inside the text box. If it is not visible, choose View > Ruler. On the horizontal ruler at the top of the screen, drag the bottom triangle to the right until you are satisfied with the amount of space between the bullet point and your text.

4. Add an Excel chart.

  • To insert a chart into your poster, you can create it directly in Powerpoint.  Choose Insert > Chart or select the Insert Chart button on the Standard toolbar.

  • You can enter your data directly into the datasheet or copy and paste into the cells from an Excel file.  To change the chart type, you can select a new chart type from the drop-down menu underneath the Chart Type button or right-click on your chart and select Chart Type.

  • You can also adjust the colors of each section by double-clicking on that section.  If you want to make changes to your chart data later, double-clicking on the chart will bring back the datasheet.  Any changes you make to the data sheet are automatically reflected in your chart.

5. Edit and revise your poster as needed. Keep a backup copy at each stage of the process, so if you make a mistake you can go back to a previously saved version of your poster.
