About Special Collections

Special Collections Description and Mission

The UNC Health Sciences Library collects, preserves, and provides appropriate access to materials that document the historical continuum of the science and practice of the health disciplines. Special Collections includes digital collections, historical collections, archival collections, oral histories, instruments and realia, and provides research services and related programming in the history of the health sciences, such as exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and other events.

The mission of the Health Sciences Library Special Collections is to serve the students, faculty, and staff of the University of North Carolina as well as the people of North Carolina and elsewhere by providing informational, educational, and research services in the history of the health sciences.

Reading Room Hours

Special Collections materials are accessible by appointment from Monday through Thursday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, except for University holidays. Appointments may be arranged by contacting the Resources Management Department at 919-962-0500.
