On October 8, 2007, the Nobel Foundation announced that UNC Professor Oliver Smithies had won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, which was shared jointly with Drs. Mario Cappechi and Martin Evans, "for their discoveries of principles for introducing specific gene modifications in mice by the use of embryonic stem cells."
