The National Library of Medicine recently updated PubMed MEDLINE's interface. Can we help you learn the new PubMed, and if so, how?

Tell us how we can help by submitting this very brief questionnaire.

Please contact the Health Sciences Library's Ask a Librarian service for immediate help!

We invite you to preview the new HSL home page in our beta environment.

This is the first phase in our website redesign.  We plan not only to give it a new and updated look, but also to make it easier to use.  Big changes will continue to be announced here on our newsblog, so stay tuned!

What’s new?

The biggest difference you’ll notice is that it looks different -- the visual design of the home page is different.  There’s a graphical element that we’ll use to highlight events, news, resources, and services.  You can also search the catalog from the search box on the home page - you'll be presented with matches from anywhere in the record.

The ITS Lab in HSL will permanently close on Friday, August 14th

The lab closing is a result of cuts in the campus ITS state budget.  Students needing a computer lab may use the ITS computer lab located across the street in the Gillings School of Global Public Health, 201 Rosenau Hall. This lab duplicates the services previously offered at the Health Sciences Library, in addition to offering a greater number of computers, a computer classroom and access to courseware requested by instructors.

Hours information for the ITS Lab in 201 Rosenau Hall (Public Health) is available from our hours page.

HSL has just implemented changes for links to full text articles in PubMed. The new link, "Find@UNC," appears at the top of the Abstract view. Once selected, the link to full text will go to a page listing all choices for online availability as well as other options for finding articles such as a catalog search and our Interlibrary Loan service. This change enables linking to more full text articles than we have been able to do previously.

When you search the HSL customized PubMed interface, you'll see one or more icons displaying at upper left above the Abstract, as follows.

  • Sometimes you'll see commercial publisher icons preceding our "Find@UNC" icon. We often have access via this icon but not always (in some cases this access isn't licensed by UNC).

Borrowing books from area academic libraries just became easier with the debut of Search TRLN (Triangle Research Libraries Network). Access Search TRLN from the UNC-Chapel Hill Libraries Catalog or go directly to http://search.trln.org.

Search TRLN allows you to search for materials at all four institutions at once, or at any of the libraries you select (e.g., UNC and Duke only, or only medical or law libraries in TRLN). In addition, the catalog makes it easy to refine your search to get the items you need. A search for "North Carolina," for example, leads you to options that let you narrow your search by subject (history, politics and government, economic conditions, etc.), region, ti

The procedure for gaining off-campus access to online library resources is changing, beginning July 6, 2006.

The UNC-Chapel Hill libraries license more than 40,000 online journals, databases, and other resources. UNC-Chapel Hill students, faculty, staff, hospital staff, and AHEC affiliates may use most of these resources from off-campus computers. In the past, a valid PID was required to authenticate your affiliation with the university.

As of July 6, 2006, the libraries are implementing a more secure procedure.

  • University students, faculty, staff and will supply their ONYEN and password;
  • UNC Hospital staff will continue to use their PID;
  • AHEC affiliates will continue to authenticate in the current mode.
