To designate a gift to a specific fund or area of the library, you can choose to support one of our existing funds below.

To give online, simply click the fund name you wish to support. If you would like to create a new fund to designate your gift, please contact Ryan Clark (rclark@unc.edu or (919) 962-3694).

Friends of the HSL

HSL2006-1

The Friends of the Health Sciences Library Annual Fund accepts all undesignated gifts, which can be used to support the changing needs and goals of the HSL from year-to-year.

Ned Brooks Library Excellence Fund

This fund honors the dedicated service of Dr. Edward Foster Brooks as the long-time chair of the HSL’s Board of Visitors. Ned was a constant advocate for the value of the library in education and research and this fund provides flexible resources to be used at the discretion of the HSL’s Director.

New Century Library Fund

The New Century Library Fund was created to meet the widening gap between state funding and the escalating costs of supporting biomedical research in a top-ranked university. Gifts to the New Century Library Fund help offset rising journal costs and allow the HSL to support increased research and new research fields at UNC.

Samuel and Harriette Hitt Health Sciences Library Endowment

This undesignated endowment named in honor of former director of the library was developed to address current and future high-priority needs of the HSL.

Frank H. Netter, M.D. Endowment

This endowment was established by Francine Netter Carlson in honor of Frank H. Netter, M.D. to support library services enhancing access to medical knowledge.

Bullitt Founders’ Fund

The Bullitt History of Medicine Club is a student-run organization that celebrates the rich history of the health sciences. This fund supports expenses related to the Bullitt Club programs and interests and provides money for the annual McLendon-Thomas essay prize, which is awarded to a student each year. Additionally, the fund can be used to support one-time or permanent exhibits and resources for the Health Sciences Library that align with Bullitt Club interests.

B.R. Wilcox Rare Books Endowment

Dr. Wilcox loved the history of medicine and loved rare books. During his tenure as Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery, he gave a rare book to the HSL every year in honor of his chief resident. He continued donating books to the HSL even after his retirement, totaling over 1,400 volumes. The Wilcox Rare Book Endowment helps the HSL to continue Dr. Wilcox’s practice by purchasing books and materials for our Rare Books Collection.

Sheldon Peck Rare Books Fund for Orthodontics and Dental Medicine

The Sheldon Peck Rare Books Fund for Orthodontics and Dental Medicine supports the expansion and preservation of the Library’s special collections holdings in the areas of Orthodontics and Dental Medicine. These holdings include 163 rare books generously donated by Dr. Peck and his wife Dr. Leena Peck. This fund also allows for the digitization of unique materials already in the collection to enhance their world-wide accessibility. Dr. Peck, a distinguished academic and orthodontist in Boston, is a longtime collector and expert in European old-master artworks as well as rare books of value historically and scientifically in the development of medicine and dentistry.

William B. Blythe Memorial Fund for the History of the Health Sciences

The William B. Blythe Memorial Fund supports the expansion and preservation of our historical and rare book collection. This fund will enable the historical and rare books areas of the library to be properly equipped with climate controlled storage, casework for exhibits and specialized equipment for a preservation lab. Dr. Blythe was passionate about medicine and its heritage and shared this enthusiasm with his students and colleagues. This fund honors that legacy by preserving the history of health care advances for decades to come.
